It is considered one of the most beautiful and fascinating Tuscan Renaissance architectural models of the sixteenth century. It is located just outside the historic center of the city, its magnificence and the isolated location make it unique, marveling every visitor that watches it, leaving him literally speechless.

Temple of San Biagio
The temple is dedicated to the Madonna of San Biagio and it was built on an ancient early Christian church’s site dedicated to Santa Maria. At the beginning of ‘500 were kept only a few remains of the church; in a wall of the church even today you can see an ancient fresco: “Madonna and Child with Saint Francis” by a Sienese artist of forth century A.C.

The sanctuary is located on the slopes of Montepulciano’s hill. Inside the church there are several statues of saints: St. John the Baptist, Saint Catherine of Siena, St. Agnes, St. George.

The church of San Biagio has a greek cross plan, with four symmetrical rectangular arms which meet in the square cruise, covered by a dome (13 meters in diameter) which was built between 1513 and 1544.

A beautiful place, definitely worth visiting, maybe in a tour that includes a visit to the towns of Montepulciano, Monticchiello, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza, discovering the enchanted places of the beautiful Val d’Orcia lands.

How to arrive to Montepulciano and San Biagio Temple

As you can see in the map below, the church is located just outside Montepulciano. Taking the SP71 provincial road is easy to get Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia, while choosing the SP68 you can pass from Monticchiello, a beautiful medieval village whose road with cypress trees and curves is maybe the most famous Tuscan road in the world, used several times as commercials’ set.

Val d’Orcia and Chianti Classico are both the most famous and visited areas of Tuscany, full of wonderful ancient “borghi”, “castles” and gorgeous views, which every tourist is pleased to see at least once in his life.
